Problems In The Balkans

The Balkans was a very poor area of Europe. It was controlled by the Turkish Empire (also known as the Ottoman Empire) which was very weak. It suffered from increasing corruption and nationalism and wa soften refered to as the "sick man of Europe". Other European powers wanted influence in the Balkans, Germany wanted to build a railway to the East through the Balkans, Austria Hungary wanted to stop Serbia from stirring up Slavic people inside its own lands (The Slavs wanted independence and hoped that Serbia being a Slavic country would help them), Russia wanted sea access from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean through straits which were controlled by the Ottoman Empire.
