Primary data:

  •  Data which is gathered first hand by the researcher or their representative
  • It is produced for a purpose in order to test a hypothesis in an experiment
  •  Eg. Milgram created an experiment to test obedience

Advantages

  • Usually replicable and produces similar results and so is reliable
  • Highly representative as useful in methods like surveys which are populatin specific
  • Generated first-hand so carries authenticity and credibilty (uses original docs and sources as evidence)

Disadvantages

  • Can be time consuming and expensive to generate data
  • May be subject to researcher bias, as only data that supports a researcher's study may be used
  • May be limited by ethical considerationsapplyed to protect the p's
