Primary data:
- Data which is gathered first hand by the researcher or their representative
- It is produced for a purpose in order to test a hypothesis in an experiment
- Eg. Milgram created an experiment to test obedience
Advantages
- Usually replicable and produces similar results and so is reliable
- Highly representative as useful in methods like surveys which are populatin specific
- Generated first-hand so carries authenticity and credibilty (uses original docs and sources as evidence)
Disadvantages
- Can be time consuming and expensive to generate data
- May be subject to researcher bias, as only data that supports a researcher's study may be used
- May be limited by ethical considerationsapplyed to protect the p's
