INTRODUCTION

Preston is a city in North West England.

SITE

Preston is built on the inside of a meander in the River Ribble, which would have been useful for defense to early settlers. It also provides water. The area surrounding Preston is a floodplain, so good for growing crops.

SITUATION

Preston was an industrial town during the Industrial Revolution because of it's docks (it was never a big port) and nearby coal supplies.

CONNECTIVITY

Preston has a major railway station connecting it to London and Glasgow and the UK's first section of motorway, which was built in the 1960s.

HISTORY

In Roman times, Preston was a road junction betweeen a road from Carlisle to Manchester and a road to the fort at Ribchester. It was mentioned in the Domesday book as a major town, and it was the richest in Lancashire in 1218. It was originally a market town, but then, in the Industrial Revolution, changed cotton. Later, it began to produce electrical goods. When most of the country deindustrialised, Preston became a major shopping area. It was made a city in the 21st century. It is the headquaters of the Lancashire County Council.
