The increase in population meant cheap, low quality houses had to be built for the huge influx of people to towns and cities to find work
'Back to back' houses:
- build quality was very poor
- had limited natural lighting so candles or gas lamps had to be used which lead to respiratory problems because of the poor ventilation
- 'back' houses had even worse ventilation and natural light; had cesspools outside which made them even more unhygenic
