Prejudice

-prejudice is extreme unfavourable attitude associated with 3 negative parts:

1) cognitive - stereotypes we hold

2) affective - feelings of hostility & hatred

3) behavioural - avoidance, assault, discrimination

Realistic Conflict Theory - Sherif:

-stated prejudice rises from conflict between groups e.g. resources, land etc, conducted boys' summer camp experiments, introducing competition created intergroup conflict, when groups need to work together for common aim reduction in hostility, intergroup hostility can only be reduced by superordinate goals 

Evaluation:

-evidence showing competition increases hostility between groups - valid support
