- Once sperm is deposited and responds to the secondary oocytes chemoattractants, they swim through the cervix and uterus towards the oviduct.
- CAPACITATION occurs next, in which the membrane in front of the acrosome layer of the sperm head becomes more permeable to calcium ions, and becomes more fluid.
- This occurs by the removal of glycoproteins and cholesterol.
- When sperm reach the secondary oocyte, the acrosome releases proteases which digest the corona radiata.
