There are many methods which enable the collection of data on crime and here we will consider official statistics, victim surveys and self-report studies.

Official Statistics

There are two major sources of official statistics on crime. First, there are crimes that are recorded by the police and, second, statistics about those who have been convicted of offences. However, these statistics have received a great deal of criticism and many people now turn to victim surveys such as the BRITISH CRIME SURVEY (BCS) as more reliable sources of information. The state now carries out victim surveys and the results are published by the Home Office, which makes them official. Another source of survey data on crime and deviance is self-report studies, where people are asked if they have committed any crime.
