Power of PM and Cabinet and relationship between them

Power of PM and Cabinet

  • Executive far more powerful under Tony Blair in early 2000s, easily getting anti terror reforms in Parliament
  • However recentely Executive has been very limited by Parliament, biggest defeat of government ever in 2019
  • PM is also foreign policy leader so can conduct foreign policy independant of parliament, 2011 Cameron commited air strikes in Lybia
  • However in more modern day PM usually seeks the approval of Parliament, 2013 Parliament voted against air strikes in Syria, PM listened
  • Executive can force a Parliament into a certain position, May in 2017 calling a snap general election
  • However Parliament bit back from this, hung Parliament making executive very weak as a result
