POSTMODERNISTS and the MEDIA

Postmodernism is related to the term 'modernism'. 'Post' means to come after. In other words, Postmodern thought is that which comes after or develops from modernistic thought. 

Modern society is characterised by industrial revolution, blue collar jobs and belief in metanarratives. A Postmodern society is characterised by technology revolution, white collar jobs and decline in metanarratives (big stories/theories to explain the world).

Lyotard argues that in an era of global media in which we learn more and more about other peoples' beliefs and lifestyles, it becomes less and less possible to regard one lifestyle or one belief system as the true one, meaning there is no such thing as truth

Strinati argues that the media is important in the development of Postmodern society, particularly in terms of image and style. Style is more important than substance - how things look are more important than meaning.
