  • A dislike of urban life, embrace of the natural world.
  • A love of the supernatural
  • Use of ordinary language

Porphyria's lover is a dramatic monologue.

The poem is about a weak lover 'too weak' 'pale' 'no pain' 'so glad it had its upmost will'.

The speaker is a controlling psychopathic lover, suffering from a disorder.

The poet establishes the speaker's mood before Porphyria arrives, the personification of the weather 'sullen' and pathetic fallacy. The weather was angry, paranoia.

'when glided in Porphyria' dramatic shift to positive, glide shows her as surreal and angelic. Compared to the negativity
