What is a political party?
- An organisation that seeks to win political power by candidates up for election. Political parties usually have a broad ideological identity, that their members hold similar values and goals.
- Sometimes infighting over aims, for example in the conservative party over Europe in the 1980s, would appear to contradict the idea of complete ideological unity but nevertheless broadly speaking, aspirations are similar.
- A party will generally have broad policy focus, as as a major party it must present itself as a possible party of government.
