There are Different Types of Poem.

A syllable is a word, or part of a word, which can be said in a single sound. E.g. in 'poem', 'po' and 'em' are syllables.

Not all poems are the same. These are some different kinds of poem you might run into: 

HAIKUS: short poems from Japan - they only have 3 lines and 17 syllables.

BALLADS: poems that tell a story. They often have four-line verses and a chorus.

FREE VERSE: a type of poem which doesn't rhyme and doesn't have a set line length.

SONNETS: usually 14 lines long, and have a special rhyme pattern.

LIMERICKS: funny poems, with 5
