Plastic Theatre- 'The use of expressionism and unconventional techniques such as props, sound imagery and stage directions, to convey a blatant parallel with the characters states of mind on stage.'

Used to present the truth of Blanche's mind, emotions, and memories in the stage setting.

Williams created vision of the world that included distorted images symbolising inner psychological states (e.g. shadows on the ground, gunshots) 

Examples: 

As Stanley waits to get his revenge on Blanche after hearing her speech about him being a brute, the locomotive is heard. This foreshadows Stanley's violation, it is a symbol that Stanley's aggression is not going anywhere. If anything, it is gaining momentum.
