Plant Oils and Emulsions

Oils from plants

  • Some fruits and seeds contain a lot of oil
  • These oils can be extracted and used for food or fuel
  • To get the oil out, the plant material is crushed
  • Then it's pressed between two metal plates and squash the oil out
  • A centrifuge can be used to seperate the oil from the crushed plant material, this is a lot like using a spin-dryer to get water out of wet clothes
  • Another way of getting oil from plant materials is by using a solvent
  • Distillation then refines the oil
  • It removes the water, solvents and impurities

Vegetable oils
