Auxin is the hormone that controls growth near the tip of shoots and roots of plants.

It controls growth in resopnse to

 1) light (phototropism):

  • Plants grow towards light, When the plant is exposed to light auxin moves and accumulates towards the shaded side of the plant.
  • Now theres more auxin on the shaded side the plant will elongate (growing on one side which makes the plant bend towards in this case to the light) as the auxin is the growth hormone.

2) Gravity (gravitropism) or (geotropism)

  • When the shoot grows sideways because if gravity more auxin falls to the side on the ground, which makes that side grw faster as theres more auxin on that side. This causes the shoot to bend upwards away from the ground.
  • Only For Roots!: when a ROOT is growing side ways and auxin collects on one side because of gravity extra auxin inhibits growth in the roots so the side with extra auxin will not grow faster, the shoot…
