Piggy's greatest downfall is his appearance and is in part, the reason he is eventually killed. The early teasing of him being: fat, clumsy, asthmatic and having glasses is a reason to bully him. This sets him up from the beginning to also be on the receiving end of hate from the other boys. This makes Piggy potentially Golding's most important character as he becomes a punching bag for the boys inherent evil to be displayed - he is good at bringing the bad out in people. Even Ralph. Hence his name 'Piggy'. This creates a discussion of how people, in Golding's mind, correlate appearance with your worth, people who take this to an extreme like Jack demonstrate inherent evil. Nobody ever assumed Piggy may have more complex understandings of bad situations due to his entire life he has been in one, if he has always being bullied he has a greater knowledge than anyone on how to live at a disadvantage.

  • Jack breaks Piggy's glasses symbolises unimportance of intelligence when societal conventions have been suspended.
  • Jack breaks Piggy's glasses symbolises evil as there is no progression, no sacrifice just senseless aversion to a person.

The importance of Piggy wanting a to "make a sundial" shows a reaching
