Piaget’s Theory:

Combinations of schemas are known as operations  

Two cognitive processes - Assimilation and Accommodation 

(Piaget uses AA) 

ASSIMILATION: Using an existing schema to deal with a new object or situation. 

Posting a toy into the designated slot 15-month baby developed a simple schema for ‘posting’ blocks into a shape sorter. Different coloured circular shapes given to the toddler are promptly sorted using this schema and posted into the shape sorted 

ACCOMMODATION: This takes place when an existing schema will not work when faced with a new object or situation and the schema must be changed or altered. 

The toddler is given a square toy which will not fit into the circular hole. The ‘posting’ schema needs to be altered to try different holes.  So, a new shape schema is developed. Some shapes are circular and some are square.
