Physiological approach (strengths and weaknesses)

?
  • a strength of the approach is that it has practical applications in terms of treatment and developing programmes to benefit people. Eg Dabbs found that male inmates who committed personal crimes of sex and violence had higher testosterone levels than other inmates, they also displayed characteristics of being dominant and confrontational. this information could be used practically by giving drugs to reduce levels of testosterone in male prisoners in order to reduce the likelihood of violent crimes. This is a strength of the research from the approach as it therefore benefits indivs and society which is one of psychology's main aims.
  • a further strength is that the research within this approach is experimentally based, using scientific equipment and objective methods of investigation. this increased psychology's credibility in the scientific field. Eg Raine used PET scans to objectively identify differences in areas of the brain between NGRI and a group of matched controls. this allowed him to see that it was less activity in the prefrontal and parietal areas in NGRI and also in amygdala that potentially caused them to commit murder due to creating a lack
