Change of state

A substance can change from one state to another by being heated or cooled:

The kinetic theory of matter

ALL MATTER IS MADE UP OF SMALL ________ THAT ARE CONSTANTLY _________. The higher the temperature, the ________ the particles move. When close together, the particles attract each other more _______ but if they get too _______ they repel.

Cicle/fill in as appropriate:

Solids

Particles are packed closely together in regular rows/too far apart to attract each other/close enough to attract but further apart than in a solid. They are no longer in a fixed position/constantly vibrating but cannot move out of their fixed positions/moving randomly at high speed. If the particles vibrate faster, they take up more space and so the solid ______ a little.

Liquids

Particles are packed closely together in regular rows/too far apart to attract each other/close enough to attract but further apart than in a solid. They are no longer in a fixed position and free to move about/constantly vibrating but cannot move out of their fixed positions/moving randomly at high speed. They have more kinetic energy than in a ______.

Gases

Particles are packed closely together in regular rows/too far apart to attract each other/close enough to attract but further apart than in a solid. They are no longer in a fixed position and free to move about/constantly vibrating but cannot move
