Mercury atoms in a fluorescent tube

  • Electrons passing through the tube collide with electrons in the mercury atoms.
  • This transfers energy (the mercury atom gains energy from the collision).
  • This causes the orbital electrons in the mercury atom to move to a higher energy level.
