plants use some of the oxygen they produce to carry out respiration. respiration provides them with energy to grow and increase their biomass (living mass). we can then use this biomass for food, for us and for living stock ; or use it as a fuel, as in the case of wood.

sugar cane can be fermented into alcohol that is used in Brazil (called biofeul). plants can also be used to make fibres, such as cotton, and employed for pharmaceutical purposes (medicines).
