Photosynthesis:

Carbon dioxide + Water -------> Oxygen + Glucose

Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplast and is composed of two different reactions: the light dependent reaction and the Calvin-Benson cycle (light independent reaction).

Light dependent reaction:

This reaction takes place at the thylakoid membrane (or grana). 

1) Chlorophyll absorbs light and it loses two electrons. This is called photoionisation. 

2) Water splits (photolysis) into O2, H+ and electrons. The electrons replace those lost by the chlorophyll. O2 is a by-product and is given off. 

3) Electrons from the chlorophyll pass down an electron transport chain losing energy as they go. This energy is used to pump hydrogen ions across the membrane…
