PHONOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT:
-Plosives earlier than fricatives
Main explanation for why sounds are acquired before others is because of ‘articulatory ease’ and ‘perpetual discriminability’- how easy it is for a child to create the sounds and how easily they can distinctly hear specific sounds.
Children use many non-standard phonological features. An obvious connection between babbling and recognisableword production, a child might produce ‘replicated words’. These are when a syllable is repeated twice – often used for animals “moo moo” for a cow or “baa baa” for a sheep or in place of harsher, more adult lang. “wee wee” instead of “wee”.
