Atonement and Salvation (Part C)

Atonement= the idea of being 'at one', or reconciled with God

Salvation= being saved from sin, essential to have eternal life with God in heaven

-Jesus' obedience to God and his suffering were so powerful that they offered redemption (freedom from the consequences of sin)

-Moral Change Theory (everything Jesus did set an example in order to guide humans towards positive moral change, which would restore their relationship with God)- Liberal Protestants

-Ransom Theory (Jesus' death 'paid the price' to release humans from being enslaved to the devil bcause of there sin)- Roman Catholic

-no scriptual basis for the ransom theory and some believe it gives too much importance to the devil

-Penal Substitution Theory (Jesus' death paid the penalty for human sin, demanded by God's justice)- Evangelical Protestants

-being baptised, repenting for sins, accepting Jesus, going to Church and doing good help achieve salvation

-justification by faith, salvation is available through the grace of God for everyone who believes in God and accepts Jesus as their saviour

-Protestants believe that faith in Jesus is enough for a person to be saved

-Roman Catholics believe salvation is achieved through faith and participating in the sacraments

-Orthodox Christians believe salvation is a gradual process by living a Christian life

-confirms the belief in an ominpotent and omnibenevolent God

-members of the Trinity are important to salvation

-atonement has made it feasiblefor all humans to be reconciled with each other, and as part of stewardship they should maintain this reconciliation
