Phenol is more acidic than aliphatic alcohols:
1) Lone pairs on O is drawn towards the benzene ring => O-H bond is weakened so that H+ is lost relatively easily.
2) phenoxide ion is stabilized by delocalisation of negative charge over O and benzene ring. This encourges dissociation of the phenoxide ion.
use of phenols:
- antiseptic
- disinfectants
Order of acid strength: phenol>water>ethanol
