Perspectives on the family : Functionalists stress that the positive functions the family performs for society and its members. The New Right, like Functionalists see the hetero sexual nuclear family as essential to social stability, but say it isnt there because of family diversity. By contrast, Feminists and Marxists see it as an oppresive, exploitative institution benefitiing only men (patriarchy) or capitalism.

The Role of the education system: Most of the approaches to this issue take a 'macro' view: they look at society as a whole & how education 'fits in' to it. Functionalists take a positive view of the education view of the education system. They argue that it performs vital functions for society.
