Periodicity: ionisation energies and atomic radii

HideShow resource information

Variation in first ionisation energies and atomic radii

  • Nuclear charge
  • Distance from nucleus
  • Electron sheilding
  • All affect ionisation energy
  • Across each period, ionisation energy shows a general increase
  • number of protons increases- more attraction acting on electrons
  • Electrons are added to same shell- outer shell is drawn in slightly
  • Same number of inner shells- sheilding will hardly change
  • Attraction between nucleus & outer electron
