The system of having patrons and clients in ancient Rome was focused around having a public display of status. This is because there were clear inequalities between the patron and client.

The patron wanted political support and prestige.

The client wanted money or influence.

Both the patron and client gained mutual benefits from the agreement. And once this relationahip was established the agreement continued down the generations.

Everybody apart from the Emperor was a client and some were patrons.
