Initial success:
- Prussia had gained more support from other German states
- their troops were able to mobilise quickly compared to French's
- they made use of their 6 railway lines contrasting against France's 2
- Prussia's troops were under the command of General Moltke who was superb
- they also had in their power the breech-loading needle gun designed by Alfred Krupp
Battle of Metz:
- in August 1870, Prussian troops surrounded the outskirts of Metz to prevent French troops from escaping to go to Paris
- the French did try to escape but after the Battle at Metz they were defeated 16th August
