Parts of and using a microscope

?

Magnification- the degree to which the size of an image is larger than the image itself.

Resolution-  the degree to which it is possible to distinguish between two objects that are very close together.

TYPES OF MICROSCOPE:

1. LIGHT MICROSCOPES

  • they have a lower resolution than electron microscopes.
  • max res- 0.2 micrometers
  • usually used to look at whole cells or tissues
  • max mag- x1500

2. LASER SCANNING CONFOCAL MICROSCOPES

  • use laser beams instead of light to scan a specimen thats usually tagged with fluroscent dyes
  • a laser beam is focused through a lens which is aimed at a beam splitter.
  • this splits the beam and some of the light is directed at the specimen
