Magnification- the degree to which the size of an image is larger than the image itself.
Resolution- the degree to which it is possible to distinguish between two objects that are very close together.
TYPES OF MICROSCOPE:
1. LIGHT MICROSCOPES
- they have a lower resolution than electron microscopes.
- max res- 0.2 micrometers
- usually used to look at whole cells or tissues
- max mag- x1500
2. LASER SCANNING CONFOCAL MICROSCOPES
- use laser beams instead of light to scan a specimen thats usually tagged with fluroscent dyes
- a laser beam is focused through a lens which is aimed at a beam splitter.
- this splits the beam and some of the light is directed at the specimen
