Partial sleep deprivation

Individual experiences a reduction in sleep compared to normal. Also occurs when deprived of 1 particular stage of sleep.

The "flower pot" technique:
Jouvet 1967 testing REM deprivation in cats. Placed on flower pot they didn't fall off in NREM sleep but did in REM

NREM and REM sleep deprivation:
Dement (1960) ppts deprived of either NREM or REM to test differences in effects of 2. Effect of REM = more severe regarding aggression, poor concentration and need more sleep to catch up on. Attempts to enter REM doubled from 12->26
