Parliament:  A supreme law making body in the UK. Pressure upon the Parliament comes from a number of sources.

Pressure groups: these are bodies of people with shared interests who get into the government to change certain areas of the law.

sectional/ interest: the groups interest is to firther their own ends of a parictualr belief they all share. E.G. National farmers union.

Casue group: they promote a particular idea or belief. E.G. Greenpeace.

Insider groups: They have direct contact with government ministers and parliament (sectional groups)

Outsider groups: they have to resort to direct action to promote their cause E.G. Fathers 4 Justice. Outsider groups usually get involved in things like marches and demonstrations in order to be noticed.

Advantages: pressure groups help the MPs keep in touch with what people think, for example, pressure from environmental grouples may have persuaded the government to change car tax regulations to favour smaller more fuel efficiant cars. Also to ban smoking in public places from the bill in 2007.
