Paper 1, Network Topologies, Wi-Fi & Data Packets

  • Star topologies - Each computer is connected to the central device by an individual connection. If the central device fails, the whole network fails.
  • Mesh topologies - All devices are connected to one another so that if one device goes down, the network remains active.
  • Wi-Fi - frequency of either 2.4GHz or 5GHz. A 2.4GHz network contains channels. Ideally, devices should be connected to channels 1, 6 & 11 as this reduces the likelihood of data collisions for these channels do not overlap. With 5GHz networks, there are more
