A wave is an ocsillation that transfers energy. Vibrations in your vocal cords produce sound waves. Microphones in your phone also work in a similar way - electromagnetic waves are used to communicate between the two phones. Sound and water waves are mechanical waves - and need a medium (matter) to travel through. Electromagnetic waves do not.
