P5 - Waves in Matter

P5.1:(Wave Behaviour);

P5.1.1:(Waves and their properties):

A wave is an ocsillation that transfers energy. Vibrations in your vocal cords produce sound waves. Microphones in your phone also work in a similar way - electromagnetic waves are used to communicate between the two phones. Sound and water waves are mechanical waves - and need a medium (matter) to travel through. Electromagnetic waves do not.

Sound waves are longitudinal, longitudinal waves - the particles of the medium move parallel to the wav's direction of travel (think of a spring) - motion of the particles is along the long
