Whenever two objects touch there are always two forces involved. If a car crashes into a bollard. The car applies a force to the bollard called the action force. The bolard also exerts a force back onto the car known as the reaction force, which is what does the damage. The forces are equal in size and work in opposite directions.

Car manufacturers crash test their cars by simulating crashes from different angles and at different speeds to see what might happen in a real accident. Crumple zones and air
