Horsepower is not a measure of work it is a measure of power.

It tells you how quickly energy transfer is taking place. Power is measured in watts(W).

1 horsepower = 750 watts

If you want to compare the power of different machines, it is not enough to just know how much energy they use, you also need to know....

  • the amount of energy transferred in Joules
