Ozymandias

Context

  • Shelly was a 'romantic poet'- romanticism was a big movenment that influenced art and literature in the late 1700s and early 1800s. 'Romantic' poets believed in emotion rather than reason, triend to capture intense experienes in their work and paritcularly focused on the power of nature. Shelly also disliked monarchies, absolute power and oppression of ordinary people. His radical views were inspired by events of the French revolution, where moarchies were overthrown

Analysis

'I met a traveller from an antique land'

  • Shelly frames the piem as a story to make it clear that the narrator hasn't even seen the statue himself, he's only heard about it. This emphasises how unimportant Ozymandias is now.
