The multi-store model was put forward by Attikinson and Shiffrin (1968) which consists of 3 stores, which are the sensory memory, the short-term memory (STM) and long-term memmory (LTM). Information is encoded into sensory memory by being stored in the same way it is recieved. If attention is given to the information it is transferred to STM which needs to be encoded acoustically. If the information is elaborately rehearsed it is transferred to LTM. This means it has to be encoded by verbally repeating it and giving it meaning. Also, the memory stores have different durations for storing the information: sensory is 0.5 to 2 seconds, short term within 18 seconds and long term is potentially a lifetime.
