• Form of drama with a display of human suffering 
• Generally demands that the downfall of the protagonist comes from the character's own flaws and errors
• Aristotle wrote that tragedy must involve the reversal of fortunes of a powerful person from good to bad, due to the hamartia of the protagonist- can lead to catharsis for the audience

Hamartia= fatal flaw
