Introduction

Tonality

The movement starts in D major, but by bar 8 has modulated to A major, before modulating around the circle of fifths to E minor (the dominant minor of A major and the secondary dominant of the home key) then to B minor in bars 11 and 12, using an unexpected B major chord on the first beat of bar 13 (sharpening the 3rd).

The cadence in bars 17-18 establishes the key of A major once more, using a perfect cadence (E- A) (back around the circle of fifths).
