Of Mice and Men is a short novel (sometimes called a novella) which was written by John Steinbeck in 1936 and published in 1937 (context)

The events of the novella occur over three days and it is set on a ranch in the Salinas Valley in California. Because it was set in America during the 1930's, this is when the Great Depression took place. The Great Depression was a severe economic downfall which happened worldwide after world war one. Because of this, many American's were eager to pursue the American Dream. The American Dream is where people have a richer and fuller life, where they own their own bit of land, and freedom from working for others.
