two types of dreams: the first dream includes companionship, honesty and love. like the idea of a dream farm. however the second dream is more nightmareish, it includes being solitary and excluding all other human contact. this is the situation of crooks.

loneliness: different characters seek comfort and solace in different things- for candy it is his dog. for george and lennie it is each other; for crooks it is his pride and his unerring skill at pitching horses.
