Little Crow's War - Minnesota, 1862
BACKGROUND:
- Indian tribe involved - Santee Sioux (Dakota)
- This tribe accepted the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851
- The treaty was supposed to give them annuities (annual payments) - for 10 years
CAUSES:
- Delay in payment of Santee Sioux's annuity
- Cheating by traders
- Poor harvest
- Near to starvation
- Four Dakota, returning from an unsuccessful hunt, murdered five settlers
WHAT HAPPENED:
- Fearing retaliation Little Crow (chief of the Dakota tribe) led his warriors in an uprising
