Little Crow's War - Minnesota, 1862

BACKGROUND:

  • Indian tribe involved - Santee Sioux (Dakota)
  • This tribe accepted the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851
  • The treaty was supposed to give them annuities (annual payments) - for 10 years

CAUSES:

  • Delay in payment of Santee Sioux's annuity
  • Cheating by traders
  • Poor harvest
  • Near to starvation
  • Four Dakota, returning from an unsuccessful hunt, murdered five settlers

WHAT HAPPENED:
