Fishing
Scotland's fishing industry
- new technology means fish can be found easier
- larger boats mean more fish can be caught at one time
- work on quotas, can only fish for up to 5 months then have to remain in port
- overfishing for fish such as mackerel, herring and salmon reduces population
- an increase in trawling (net dragged along ocean floor) means more fish are caught
- damages ocean floor
- by catching catches species that fishermen don't want and they have to be thrown back into the sea
EU policies
- allow fishing boats of the EU member states to fish anywhere in EU waters
- Scottish fishing boats could fish in wider territory
- More boats from other countries
