OBESITY = when the number of calories consumed in food and beverages exceeds the number of calories that the body burns to function.
CAUSES
- Consuming more calories- particulary than those in fatty and sugary food.
- than you burn off through physical activity
- the excess energy is stored by the body as fat.
- spending a lot of time sitting down
- underactive thyroid gland
SYMPTOMS
- appearance may change a lot
- cardiovascular disease - heart disease and stroke
- sleep apnea- stop breathing during sleep
- musculoskeletal disorders like osteoarthritis
- cancers- endometrial, breast and colon
MANAGEMENT
- eat a balanced, calorie controlled diet
- join a local weight loss group
- take up activites such as fast walking, jogging, swimming, or tennis
- eat slowly and avoid situations where you could be tempted to eat.
