OBESITY

OBESITY = when the number of calories consumed in food and beverages exceeds the number of calories that the body burns to function.

CAUSES

  • Consuming more calories- particulary than those in fatty and sugary food.
  • than you burn off through physical activity
  • the excess energy is stored by the body as fat.
  • spending a lot of time sitting down
  • underactive thyroid gland

SYMPTOMS

  • appearance may change a lot
  • cardiovascular disease - heart disease and stroke
  • sleep apnea- stop breathing during sleep
  • musculoskeletal disorders like osteoarthritis
  • cancers- endometrial, breast and colon

MANAGEMENT

  • eat a balanced, calorie controlled diet 
  • join a local weight loss group
  • take up activites such as fast walking, jogging, swimming, or tennis
  • eat slowly and avoid situations where you could be tempted to eat.
