In Topic 4, we examine three main alternatives to secularisation theory:

  • Theories of late modernity and post modernity- these argue that religion is not declining but merely changing as society develops.
  • Religious market theory- the view that secularisation is only one stage of a constant cycle of secularisation, revival and renewal.
  • Existential security theory- the view that religion has declined in richer countries because they are more economically secure. 

Some sociologists reject the Secularisation thesis that religion must inevitably decline in modern society. Grace Davie is one sociologists who argues against secularisation theory. In her view religion is not declining but simply taking a different, more privatised form. Although church going has declined, this is simply because attendance is now a matter of personal choice.
