William Duke of Normandy had to ensure he had full control of England after conquering the country.
He did this by:
- Building Castles
- Surveying the entire country for the Domesday Book
- Changing positions of power from Saxons to Normans
Trial by combat - This ordeal was new to Englamd, however common in Normandy. The accused and accuser would either fight until death, or until one gave in. The loser was considered to be foresaken by God and was therefore guilty. People could pay someone to fight for them if they did not want to fight for themselves.
