The New Right –

· The new right is concerned with the emergence of an underclass in society

· The underclass is responsible for a vast majority of crimes committed. This is due to their norms and values being separate from that of mainstream society and their suffering of cultural deprivation

· Murray (1994):

o The welfare state has contributed to the formation of the underclass. Unemployed men and single mothers rely on the state for all of their income, and may supplement this income through crime

o Members of the underclass reject the mainstream values of society

o The liberal culture of society has meant that a lack of order has developed, and people do not realise that their actions are deviant
