What Data Science Learns

Humanity generates approximately 2.5 quintillion bytes of various data every day. They are created literally with every click and page scrolling, not to mention watching videos and photos in online services and social networks.

 

Data science emerged long before data volumes surpassed all imaginable predictions. It has been customary to count down since 1966, when the CODATA Committee on Data for Science and Technology appeared in the world. It was created within the framework of the International Council for Science, which aimed at collecting, evaluating, storing and searching for the most important data for solving scientific and technical problems. The committee includes scientists, professors of large universities and representatives of academies of sciences from several countries, including Russia.

 

The term Data Science itself came into use in the mid-1970s with the suggestion of the Danish computer scientist Peter Naur. According to his definition, this discipline studies the life cycle of digital data from emergence to use in other fields of knowledge. However, over time, this definition has become broader and more flexible.

In the 2010s, data volumes began to grow exponentially. A number of factors have played a role - from the ubiquity of the mobile Internet and the popularity of social networks to the general digitization of services and processes.
