Types of muscle fibres

·       Slow oxidative (type 1) (slow twitch)

·       Fast oxidative glycolytic (type IIa)

·       Fast glycolytic (type IIb)

Our skeletal muscles contain a mixture of all three types but not in equal proportions

This varies in the same muscle of different people.

For example, a elite endurance athlete there will be a greater proportion of slow twitch fibers in the leg muscles

Then in an elite sprinter there will be a greater proportion of fast twitch fibers in the leg muscles.
