Types of muscle fibres
· Slow oxidative (type 1) (slow twitch)
· Fast oxidative glycolytic (type IIa)
· Fast glycolytic (type IIb)
Our skeletal muscles contain a mixture of all three types but not in equal proportions
This varies in the same muscle of different people.
For example, a elite endurance athlete there will be a greater proportion of slow twitch fibers in the leg muscles
Then in an elite sprinter there will be a greater proportion of fast twitch fibers in the leg muscles.
